Fizzy Sensory Activity

I don't know about you, but I loved elementary school science experiments, and I'm really looking forward to relearning them again with Bean as she grows up. As we quickly approach her turning 19 months old, her interest in cause and effect has grown, and changed. She very big on 'what happens if I put this here' and 'what if I add this that concoction I just made". A lot of this happens in bath tub, experimenting on how the bubbles go to and from one object to another, but yet always stay above the water, and they divide and multiply... It's just all so fascinating to her little brain!

So I decided to recreate a fun experiment we did in school, I'm sure you've seen it all over Pinterest, the Baking Soda & Vinegar Experiment! This appeals to their visual senses, along with the audible ones. They not only get to see the It's super easy to do, and you probably have everything you need already in your home.

What You'll Need:
White Vinegar
Baking Soda
Food Coloring
Spoon

Pour some vinegar into a little bowl, and mix in some food coloring. You can also use more than one color, but for our first play time with this I wanted to keep it simple, so it didn't give her too much to get distracted with.

Spread out a bunch of baking soda on a plate, or in a pan, or casserole dish, and show your little one what happens when you dribble some vinegar on the baking soda. Bean got SO excited about this she ripped the spoon out of my hand and started scooping as quickly as she could!

She also learned that if she picked up the baking soda and put it in the little bowl of vinegar, the fizzy explosion was even bigger!

She had tons of fun with this simple, learning, activity. I love that there are so many possibilities you can do with it! Add more options of vinegar colors, use an eye dropper instead of a spoon, Buy a crap load of baking soda and vinegar (I'm talking about hitting up Costco, or somewhere like it) make colored vinegar balloons (like water balloons) spread baking soda over your side walk or driveway and splash it with the vinegar balloons, sounds fun right?! You can use it for teaching different things for years to come, and those are my favorite types of activities, the ones that can grow with your little one.
